NYC woman happy after public service loans forgiven

What?! I could get my loans forgiven?!

Yes! In 2007 Congress created the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) with a simple promise: work 10 years for government or nonprofits and all remaining federal student debt will be erased. But the program was badly broken and only 0.1% of eligible applicants ever got their money.

In October 2021, the US Department of Education used emergency powers related to the COVID crisis to temporarily fix the program with the “PSLF Waiver.” Now we finally have the program we always wanted. 180,000 Americans have already been approved since November 2021.

NOTE: This is not the same program as the $10,000 Loan Cancellation announcement - which is currently the subject of lawsuits and has not yet been implemented. The PSLF Waiver is the best path to total loan forgiveness for most government and nonprofit workers - and deadline remains 10/31/2022.

The PSLF.nyc Campaign is a nonprofit effort working with nonprofits, unions, and government agencies to help 250,000 public service workers in NYC get their loans forgiven.
